I shall not see the shadows (Op.27 No.6a)
3 minutes 30 seconds
This short piece for clarinet and piano is a reworking of Song, the last of six settings from …too bitter sweet. The title is taken from a line in the poem.
I shall not see the shadows is a mixture of moods: at times melancholic and nostalgic, balanced with a central section that asserts optimism and hope.
The piece is tonal without a strong feeling of key centre. It starts in B modal minor and concludes in an ambiguous D major/minor, giving no real feeling of resolution.
