No.1 Voluntary in B flat

This short voluntary, suitable for ceremonial occasions, exploits a rhythmic interplay between the two soloists.

It is structured in five sections: A B A1 C A2. However, the first episode is primarily for organ, and is a mere eight bars before the trumpet insists on restating the main theme; the second episode is considerably longer, at 34 bars, and is more relaxed in character.

The main theme returns to conclude the piece, highlighting the trumpet's stirring upper register.

No.2 Thornbury elaboration

This is one of a collection of elaborations for trumpet and organ on well-known hymn tunes.

The descant may be used as printed, ie. sopranos singing simultaneously with the trumpet elaboration (during the final verse).

Alternatively, the trumpet could play the descant line during the penultimate verse, as a prelude to playing the elaboration for the final verse.

If preferred, the organist could use the original version (B. Harwood, 1859-1949), which has alternative harmony for verses three and five. This may be found in Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised, No.256. Alternative words: 'O Jesus, I have promised' (AMR No.331).

No.3 Hyfrodol elaboration
