The Great Wheel of the Sun (Op.8c)
1984/1994/2008, 9 minutes
A transcription of Op.8 for cello with piano accompaniment
Dedication: Lesley Shrigley Jones
These four short pieces for cello and piano were arranged in 1994 and revised in 2008.
This set is a substantial elaboration of Counting the Beats (Op.8), four love poems by Robert Graves, set by the composer in 1984. The work takes its title from a line in the final song, The Far Side of your Moon : 'Yours is the great wheel of the sun, And yours the unclouded sky'.
The original piano part was unchanged but the melodic line has been completely reworked to produce an elegiac free-standing piece.
