Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Op.23 No.2)

Settings of the traditional canticles, for SATB and organ, in mainly diatonic style

These settings were composed in 1996 and revised in 2008. Set for SATB and organ, with minimal divisi at the final cadences, they are mainly diatonic with a wide range of modulations.

The Magnificat commences in a lively D minor but concludes in a confident A major, exploring chord clusters (notably in the organ part) within a diatonic style. The organ part develops certain choral lines, integrating the piece tightly.

The Nunc Dimittis is set in A major, continuing the material with which the Magnificat concluded, developing the upwardly rising semiquaver figure from the Magnificat, and commencing with a reworking of As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.
