An elaboration for trumpet and organ based on a well-known hymn tune
- Op.34 No.2
This is one of a collection of elaborations for trumpet and organ on well-known hymn tunes.
The descant may be used as printed, ie. sopranos singing simultaneously with the trumpet elaboration (during the final verse).
Alternatively, the trumpet could play the descant line during the penultimate verse, as a prelude to playing the elaboration for the final verse.
If preferred, the organist could use the original version (B. Harwood, 1859-1949), which has alternative harmony for verses three and five. This may be found in Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised, No.256. Alternative words: “O Jesus, I have promised” (AMR No.331). Thornbury elaboration is also included in Hymn tune descants and alternative harmonisations (Op.47 No.7).
